To Birth or Not to Birth

This is a response to Julie Butterfly's blog http://www.circleoflife.org/

To birth or not to birth.

When I was your age (I’m 50 now) I made a commitment with myself that I wouldn’t have a child until the world was safe from nuclear war. At that point I had lived most of my life with the tyranny of the threat of nuclear war between the US and the USSR. Such a political reality wasn’t a good world to birth a child.

When the Berlin Wall fell down and people were talking about building a peace economy, I thought for a moment that it might be safe to bring a new born baby into a world filled with new possibilities. But the cold war in the USA didn’t end. It mutated. The American Empire is still developing a new generation of war heads.

I also didn’t want to be stuck with raising a child without community support. Raising a child in a single family house in suburbia meant that I would be isolated. Since I lived in a college town, not having others in a loving community to help me with childcare, I would have become a slave to the child’s every need.

At that time, feminists were pointing out that being isolated in a house with a child drives women crazy since they have to give up their creative lives to raise a child. I looked for an intentional community where the village would help with child care and I would be free to be a creative artist, scholar and poetess, but I didn’t find one that allowed for such freedom.

I also had a realization that as a utopian thinker, my vocation is’t to birth a physical child, but to help birth a planetary philosophy into existence. We are moving from a virgin/mother dominated culture to the regime of the Crone Goddess. The task of crones (wise women) is to birth a new world culture of peace, true love and economic global justice. I call this movement Lovolution.

Someday, dear MS Butterfly, I hope we can work together on this birth process.
